Starting January 1, 2025, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will require the inclusion of ICD-10 diagnosis codes on dental claims submitted via the 837D or 2024 ADA claim forms. This mandate aims to enhance the specificity and accuracy of dental service reporting, ensuring that claims are processed efficiently and in alignment with standardized medical coding practices.

Historically, Medicare dental claims have primarily utilized Current Dental Terminology (CDT) codes to describe procedures. The new requirement to include ICD-10 codes means that dental professionals must now:

• Determine accurate diagnoses: Identify and assign the appropriate ICD-10 codes that correspond to the patient’s condition necessitating the dental procedure.
• Update billing systems: Ensure that electronic health record (EHR) and billing systems can accommodate and process ICD-10 codes alongside traditional CDT codes.
• Train staff: Provide training for administrative and clinical staff to accurately select and input ICD-10 codes, reducing the risk of claim denials due to coding errors.

The procedure added to the ledger will have the diagnosis attached (or the user can attach it) and then the claim will automatically have the diagnosis code on it.
